Opening hours by season

The Campanile's hours change throughout the year and may be modified for events, religious celebrations at the Basilica or maintenance work. The table below summarises typical hours; the data is drawn from public sources and the official website and should be verified for your exact visit date.

PeriodTypical hoursLast entry
Spring–Summer (Apr–Oct)09:30 – 21:15~20:30
Autumn–Winter (Nov–Mar)09:30 – 17:30 approx.~16:45
Public holidays and special periodsVariableCheck in advance
Important: the extended evening hours (until 21:15) apply during the warmer months. In winter the tower closes in the late afternoon. Always check the exact hours before setting out.

Last entry: don't leave it too late

The ticket desk and access close before the stated closing time — typically around 45 minutes before. This is the time needed for the last group to go up, enjoy the view and come back down by lift.

My advice: if you're aiming for the sunset, arrive at least an hour before closing time. On busy days the last time slots sell out fast, and arriving late means risking being turned away at the door.

When the tower closes unexpectedly

There's one factor many guides overlook: the wind. The belfry, nearly 50 metres up, is open on all four sides. When a strong wind sweeps in or a storm is brewing, the ascent is suspended for safety.

  • Strong winds: temporary closure, often without advance warning.
  • Thunderstorms and thick fog: visibility is nil and the tower may remain closed.
  • Acqua alta (high water): doesn't close the tower, but can complicate access to the piazza.
  • Religious ceremonies: on some occasions access may be restricted.
Expert tip: if you have only one day and the weather is uncertain, go up first thing when the tower opens. Winds tend to strengthen in the afternoon — in the morning you have a better chance of finding it open.

The best times of day

🌅

At opening time

From 09:30: minimal crowds, raking light across the terracotta rooftops and almost no waiting. Ideal for those who want clean photos.

🌇

Golden hour

Around an hour before sunset: the most beautiful light falls on the lagoon and domes. It's also the most in-demand slot — book ahead.

🌙

Evening (high season)

When the extended hours apply, going up as dusk falls offers a rare atmosphere and skies that shift through extraordinary colours.

How to get to the Campanile

The Campanile stands at the heart of Piazza San Marco, beside the Basilica. Venice has no cars: you arrive on foot or by vaporetto (water bus).

  • Vaporetto: stops San Marco – Vallaresso or San Zaccaria, served among others by lines 1 and 2.
  • On foot: about 10 minutes from Rialto, 30–35 minutes from Santa Lucia station following the signs towards "Per San Marco".
  • Address: Piazza San Marco, 30124 Venice (VE).

Once you've settled on the right time, it's worth understanding the costs too: see prices and discounts. And if you're visiting in high season, read how to skip the queue.
